English is a required or recommended course for every University program that I would apply to…
The reason for that is because most classes are taught in English in Canada, so being able to know the language and being able to communicate it in several ways.
Writing
Many different types of projects require knowing the language well to complete the task at hand. Sciences will require lab reports and research assignments, journalism would have news articles and creative writing, and other classes would require essays, book reports, and many different types of assignments and projects.
My Ideal Writing Scenario Looks Like This:
READing
Many courses will have complex content that you will be expected to do readings on and read about, and you will have to be proficient while reading. You will more than likely be expected to do your reading the night before to get the idea of a topic before going into a lecture or lesson. This will also apply to assignments and labs, you will need to know complex words that are attached to your assignments and course that you are in.
For Example: Stoichiometry… a chemistry term

Listening
For some lectures there won’t even be notes during the class to write down. The only notes you get out of the class, would be your own notes made up of things the professor is saying during the lecture. So being able to understand what people are saying by knowing English well, is very beneficial. This also helps so you can listen and learn when your classmates are speaking to you on the topic.
SPEAKING
Alongside listening, there’s speaking. Speaking, in many cases, is used for communication. The person listening to you needs to be able to understand you well enough to communicate back. In addition to conversations and communication, presentations and public speaking are done in University as well. Not to mention it’s a skill of life.
All of these skills are taught throughout highschool in different ways. This leads up to your grade twelve class where you will be treated more like a university student to get you used to the environment and structure.
Grade twelve university level english is your friend, it is preparing you for the near future!

Language Proficiency
So… what does it mean to be language proficient?
Language proficiency actually has levels, starting at zero and going to five. When listing these, I view them as chronological age development as well, but that is just my perspective.
When you have no comprehension of the language at all, a baby for example, you would be a zero.
By having elementary proficiency, would be very little comprehension, but learning. Personally I would call this a ‘preschool’ level or level one.
Limited working proficiency is when you can have live normally through the conversations you have with people, but the sentences and conversations are extensive. This is a level two.
At a level three, it’s called being in the professional working proficiency; this is when you can speak fluently and you have a more extensive vocabulary.
To be fully professionally proficient, you have the ability to discuss broad topics, speak fluently and with few errors, answers are typically thoughtful, and conversation/speaking will come with ease. This is a level four.
To be above and beyond, you can be a level five, which is bilingual proficiency. This is when you can form sentences fluently just as you could in level four or level three in one or more languages.
Language proficiency is very important for the four reasons listed above: writing, reading, listening, and speaking. Each of these categories plays a part in deciding your language proficiency. The more language proficient, in most cases, the better your chances of getting into University there is. Which is more motivation to do well in your grade twelve University level English class.
Preschool Level Learning, Level One

TO be effective in the classroom, as well as in the workplace, your language proficiency will have to show through performance. this means how well you can write assignments/documents or how well you can communicate verbally to an audience.
Should Grade Twelve University Level English be Required for University Acceptance?
Yes, it absolutely should be a requirement because it’s a core preparation course for university for almost any program you are applying for. Is it the most important thing for the specific program you apply for? Maybe not, but it will definitely be very beneficial for your future. University professors will typically expect you to write in MLA or APA formatting, you may have to vary between the two for different classes.
Not only is it important for University, it is also important in life to be sure that in the workplace or when communicating with other people, you can do it with ease. The class itself may not be easy for individuals, but it is useful to make it easy for your future self.
